        Hi Guys,

Abbey Pumping station is a free museum in the north of the city next to the National Space Centre. It retains all 4 of the original Pumping Engines which served the city for many years. They are in working condition and are often run on live steam. The onsite boiler is capable of running three at a time.

As well as many other interesting exhibits in the Museum there is a narrow gauge railway which has a variety of diesel and a Bagnall 040 narrow gauge steam loco. On open days there are many restored bvehicled including steam and deisel road rollers.

It is free entrance most of the time with a small charge on occasional specials.

There is a steaming day on Sunday 15th April when the beam engines at least will be in action as well as the railway for passenger trips.

        Just a satisfied visitor.

        Terry

              Hi there Charlie,

I think that the subtitle: "Leicester Pumping Station" is a clue. wink 2 But I will say that the museum is in North of Leicester, and well worth a visit for those within striking distance.

              Regards

              Terry

                Hi Terryd

It dont say Leicester, It says Abbey pumping station,But im sure we wont fall out over sutch a small thing,Now i know its Leicester i realize i cant go there, From here in east anglia leicester is nearly abroad,And if i put enough juice in the car to get there it would double the value of the car,Anyway i lived in leicester for six months in 1960,Worked at the Victory tyre works in blackbird road it was ok but i prefered Northamton so i moved there,

                    Hi Terry,

Spent along day there with a few years ago while my wife was doing market research on vistors to the museum. Interesting seeing teh space museum in the distance beyond the narrow gauge railway. I made a smei-scale model of this Buxton and Thornlea engine which is near the museum entrance:

                    Original Buxton and Thornlea engine

                    The original again

Anyone following this thread will be interested in a copy of the forthcoming Special Issue, in the shops on 25 May, dedicated to 300 years of Steam in Industry. Inside will be a fairly comprehensive list of major – and not so major – museums featuring stationary steam engines. Working waterworks and other pumping stations such as Abbey, Papplewick, Ryhope, Clay Mills, Millmeece, Crofton etc. feature too. It is also lavishly illustrated! Order your copy today!

                                  Hi Neil,

the engine is still there as are many other. One of the most interesting things on steam days is that three of the four huge pumping engines in the engine hall operate on steam at the same time and it is hoped that the boiler capacity will be increased this year and it will be possible to run all four at the same time. That will be a unique experience.

Also the museum is next to the National Space Centre making a very interesting day out for all. As they say in their blurb:

"Voted large visitor attraction of the year, upon arrival you will understand why this really is a visit that is out of this world."

This picture shows the 'Rocket Tower' behind a couple of the outside exhibits, an Electric crane togehter with a 4 steam engine engine Ruston Bucyrus steam shovel which it is hoped to be bought back into operation soon.

                                  Crane with space centre

                                  Best regards

                                  Terry

P.S. the picture at the head of the thread shows two of the four engines, just in case anyone had not noticed.

This must be my cue to mention this year's Model Engineers' Day on 7th October at the Forncett Industrial Steam Museum in deepest south Norfolk. On of our star attractions will be Ramon Wilson's recently completed table engine – see the thread 'A change is as good as a rest.' If you would like a copy of my e-mail newsletter or details of the Model Engineers' Day, available nearer the time, just PM me your e-mail address.

Hope to see some of you at our regular steam days on the first Sunday of the month.

                                    Best wishes,

                                    Bill

(PS. Diane – don't forget us in your forthcoming publication!)

With only a month to go, may I remind you about the 'Model Engineers' Day Out' at the Forncett Industrial Steam Museum in south Norfolk? This year's event, on Sunday 7th October, will be the twentieth and promises to have a great selection of exhibits of all types and sizes. If you do come, please say hello. It would be nice to put a face to the people whose postings I enjoy reading. There's still time and space for a few more entries – an invitation and details from: billstarlingbs@gmail.com.
