Our club (full size engines) was given a small steam engine of unknown origin. It has a 5" bore and 10" stroke. Base dimensions are 1400mm x 230mm. Does anyone recognize it ?

The flywheel appears to not be original (more like the handwheel from a large valve). An interesting feature is the slide valve control rod which is guided thru a bush in the base of the governor. Also the long stroke water pump, attached to the piston rod.

Another project for my bucket list is to make a model of this engine.

As well as running steam engines, our club also hosted the Australian National Postie Bike Rally. Video here for those interested.

Nice engine and as you say it would make a nice model.

I have seen the crosshead driven pumps on other engines but always wondered if they would tend to twist the crosshead due to the load being off to one side.

Not sure about the flywheel, quite a lot of early engines had the round section rim to the flywheel and with it having the separate drive pulley there was no need for a "flat" rim to take a belt. What diameter is the Flywheel as a model with 1" x 2" bore and stroke would come up around the same size as a Stuart Victoria.

Can't help with identity but not a one off as the unused location for a second bearing pedestal suggests the bed was used for other layouts or possible just to make handing an engine to suit the individual installation only require one bed casting.

That flywheel might have been made like that as the engine has only one cylinder and therefor cannot be guaranteed to be self starting.
