I have several Hss Tin coated end mills purchased from a UK company, I have not had good results when using them. The edges of the end mills look unfinished when having a close look, rather rough edge. I have tried them on steel and aluminium but they seem to rub rather than cut. I have a Osbourne cutter from the 1970s and this cuts well. I also have the e-bay cutters from China which are cheap and on aluminum they are very good. What am I doing incorrect on these Hss Tin cutters.

Hi Bob

Certainly something wrong if the flute cutting edge is rough, you will never achieve a good finish with such a tool. You don't mention the cost so maybe they are bottom of the market cutters, you say you have several so if they are all the same rough cutting edges send them back or accept them as roughing tools, get some more from a known reliable source for finishing.

Hi Bob,

I bought a bargain basement lot of metric TiN coated HSS milling cutters and they were similar to the ones you describe. I ended up resharpening the tips and now they cut ok but as they were delivered they had insufficient clearance from my observations. Luckily the HSS was ok (M2) it was just the grind.

TiN coated milling cutters are effective. I would leave Tin coated cutters well alone
