Hello all, I am gradually getting my Hobson H7 sorted, the runout on the spindle has been reduced to 0.0003" tir by an excellent local precision engineering firm who ground a new properly concentric register for a smaller ID taper roller bearing. The original bearing register was not on the same centre as its opposing partner, off by more than a thou.Although there appears to be little wear on the shears there is back lash on the crosslide, the brass 3/8 acme nut moves along the threads with about ten thou total "slop" when pushed to and fro. The threads on the lead screw look equal in width when comparing the ends of the screw to the middle, but the female threads in the nut look rather sharp. Can any of you wiser and experienced people tell me if this is normal or should a new nut be made, it looks pretty straightforward once an acme tap has been sourced. As I will probabably never need to cut another such thread I would like to be sure that a new nut is justified before adding another item to befuddle my heirs.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.
Paul
