I like the look of this in 7 1/4, parts by Horley. Anyone any experience of it as a build? Thanks

Hi Nigel,

Was it a Midge? If so, this is a very old (and outdated) design.

Some have put in a lot of extra work to produce a decent loco. Otherwise best given a wide berth and ignored.

I have some experience with a 5" Midge and a member at our club has a 7 1/4" one. Both are strong locos for their size but I cannot comment on Midge as a build project. Midge was serialised in ME in 1935-37, so I agree with Julian, it's a very old design.

I should perhaps in fairness add that Martin Evans designed a new boiler for the 7.25"g Midge in ME 16th December 1966 to replace the original rivetted and soft soldered original design.

However this new boiler is not without it's critics, and especially the stay pitch of 1 3/4" and 1 7/8" and the large unsupported area on the backhead would not be approved of these days.

If you go to the Cambridge MES web site click on more information pictures there are several shots of a visiting midge but I know nothing about it. My grandfather built one in the late 80`s from the published drawings and 1935 M.E. articles I can not remember any problems. The one Martin mentions at our club will run all afternoon pulling two carriages with eight people on. The one grandfather built could be carried round the house by father and my self but we knew we had done it!

The Horley web site **LINK** says it was designed by a Mr. Dick Stockings.

Is this the designer of the original "Midge" or a new design?

Like their class 2 2-6-0 btw…

The original design was by a C (G?) R H Simpson and described by Gearge Gentry in ME 1935 and 6.

I presume the Dick Stockings design is the latest but Horley would be able to tell you that.

Seems to be plenty of staying on this one but it appears to differ from the boiler drawings I have for the Stockings design.:- Just looked a bit closer at the drawing and I see it is the same. The staying is at 1" pitch with additional support round the fire hole.
