Hi

I have a 4.5" boxford lathe with a 9 pin rotary switch and a crompton motor with a plate with A, AZ, Z, T, can anyone help me to wire them together, I have no idea the name of the switch

Hi

I think I have found out what the switch is it is a P-Type Santon switch but it has no information on it to tell me which terminals do what.

I have tried to post 2 photo's but do not know how

No there are no numbers on the switch but you are probably right that it's a cam switch

A is one end of the run winding, AZ is the other end of the run winding and the start winding together. Z is the other end of the run winding, not familiar with T unless it is Terre, as in ground or earth? doesn't sound right though, pics will he4lp, where was the motor made3, and aprox how old is it? Colonel Crompton is long gone, but they still make motors in his name!

As we all know, sorting out terminal codes on motors is a nightmare. Santon switches are a bigger nightmare!

But on the old Crompton, Z and T are the 2 ends of the Start winding and A and AZ are the Run winding. (vide the Boxford manual). As there are no internal wires connected to AZ on John's motor then both Start and Run must have a joint connection to T. Needs to be checked out with a meter.

Without any identifiers on the Santon, the only way to sort out the connections is a laborious spell with a meter. Bear in mind it is a complete Rotary, so there are 2 "Off" positions and 2 "On", one forward and one reverse. And there are unidentified links to carry current from one level of the switch to another.
