I have cut the tang off a MT5 to MT 3 sleeve to be able to use a drawbar. The one I cut was casehardened so I mounted the sleeve in the lathe and used a carbide tipped tool to turn away the hard skin first. Whether your sleeve is just case hardened or hardened through I don't know. If it is through hardened you could finish with an angle grinder.

Use an angle grinder, so whether it's case/through hardened job done in one go & if you're careful to cut through reasonably square just dress the end & Bob's your auntie… Mabel's your uncle…. Hmmm .. . I have the same situation but I bought a MT4 collet chuck with drawbar thread M12… works fine.

Hi Bob,

When the MT5 to MT 3 reducing sleeve has it tang cut off the wall thickness is thick enough so there is no problem knocking it out with a copper rod or similar. I have never had any problems getting the sleeve out of my lathe. You don't need to hammer Morse taper tools hard into the taper, just makes them more difficult to get out.

I had a similar situation all be it MT2 collet chuck and headstock MT3 so purchase the one I pictured above as the draw bar does tend to pull them in quite tight even with a light pressure on the nut. In the end purchased one that fitted the normal chuck mount with the aid of a back plate as it allows the bar to pass through the headstock.

Hi Hamish,

my 1800 student has an MT4.5 in the headstock – are you sure your is MT5? – the odd size is apprently related to 5c collets. i am planning to machine down an MT5 taper (with a femail MT3) to do the same job then use an MT3 to ER32

this adaptor is on Ebay with an hour to go which is what i really need – currently £45……..
