On one of the Radar stations Dad was on during the war, a Mosquito flew into the masts. The aircraft had been shot up, and had little control and only one engine, but the crew survived. Dad had only just come down from working at the top of the mast.

Something like that used to bug me no end, hidden or in plain sight, until put right.

OuBaille, are you mistaking me for someone else? You made a similar comment on another thread, appropriately the "brain fade" thread.

I was recently involved in making the metal components for a table (The 'axle', the locking devices, and some other bits). Making machined stainless steel and aluminium parts to 0.01mm tolerance is a pure doddle compared with what effort the furniture maker has to go through to satisfy the designer.

Apart from the actual quality of construction, the thickness of the tabletop was sanded by hand to a thickness tolerance of 0.05mm!

That tolerance was not needed over the whole surface but at the places where the moving and fixed leaf abut there is a 1.5 mm gap. If the upper and lower surfaces were not exactly level, the slightest step would be immediately apparent and like Fizzy's wheels would play on the owners mind.
