Hello Model Engineers,

I am a complete novice just starting out in Model Engineering. I’ve done some research and found a club in my local area that I’ll be joining.

Before I join, I am hoping to find some local engineers i.e. machinists in the West Midlands (Birmingham) that are willing to mentor me on various workshop tools. I’m keen to find someone that could offer their expertise and workshop facilities to train me. Alternatively if someone can provide me some information where I can attend workshop classes that would be very much appreciated.

Hello M,

Sadly evening classes for hoby engineering are becoming thin on the ground.

May I suggest that joining the club is the best way to go about finding some willing mentors? As far as I know there are no clubs with a 'minimum standard', and genuinely interested beginners should expect a warm welcome. Some clubs run beginners' courses, as does the SMEE.

Yes, please don't get the idea that you have to know anything about machining or to have built anything before you join a club. They can be a great sourceof instruction, support and often cheap tools and materials so you will get going much faster if you get involved. Our club also has lots of members who are not modellers as such but have an engineering background and like the company of like minded people.

I have an idea that Birmingham is big enough to have more than one club, and some more in outlying areas like Bromsgrove so check which is most convenient for you.
