      hello all,

I have recently upgraded my warco 250v lathe to be CNC. but I have kept the standard motor and use it with manual speed setting.

what I would like is a mach 3 to be able to control my motor speed and direct.

my question is, has anyone upgraded there warco 250v lathe with a 3 phase motor with VFD. if so, what do you use and where did you purchase it from?

      regards

          Hi Andy,

Are you sure yours is the WM-250V model? That is the designation of the one with a 3phase motor and Delta inverter drive setup. I don't know about converting one of the older DC motor drive WM-250 lathes, if it is one of those, how much space do you have to fit a motor? How big (physically) is the existing motor, it may be possible to use the same size motor as on the 250V in which case I can give you details from mine.

On the CNC side of things, how have you done the conversion? details of ballscrews, motors etc would be helpful as I intend to crack on with doing the same to mine over the winter months.

The lathe is a vm250vf sorry. I've nothing but trouble with motor since I've had it so decided to convert it.

All the parts I needed I brought from cnc4you.co.uk. A guy there called Trevor who was very helpful and all parts are at a good price and very good quality. I'll try and find a receipt of all the parts I ordered. They sell all the ball screws, stepper motor and drivers, control boards and Mach 3 software. And 3phase mill spindles.Just a shame he doesn't sell 3 phase motors for lathes.

What motor do you have in yours?

Hi Andy, the WM-250V has a 1.1KW motor, I'll try and get to the workshop tomorrow and see if I can see the plate and get the motor details off it. Would be worth giving Warco a call and speak to Tony in the spares department, he's very helpful and they can probably supply the motor as a spare part or advise as to what would be needed to fit one.

Where in the country are you? I'm in East Hampshire.

Any chance of some pictures of your conversion, interested to see how you mounted the steppers, I've got some ideas on how I want to do mine but always interested to see how others approach these conversions. My thinking is to put the Z motor in the area under the headstock where the gearbox currently resides and the x motor in a custom built apron with htd belt drive to the leadscrews.
