Hello,

Could someone help me out with a query please? Need to find out what the mod or Dp is of Colchester student change wheels. Also, what is the driving feature like – key way or multi spline a large Harrison M series?

Any help gratefully received,

Hello Carl,

Keeping this in view as much as anything else. They will almost certainly be DP wheels and 14 DP seems to ring bells. As for bore and driving keys, I'm sorry I can't help there.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for that. I have seen some Colchester change wheels that have the multi spline driving feature similar to the Harrison M types. I am seeking info on these gears in order to 3D print one for someone. Any advance on 14DP?

Pretty sure Later Colchesters such as the Student 1800 (which are equivalent to the M series Harrisons) are 1.5 mod with a multi spline centre bore.

Early Colchester's, round head etc 16 DP spline bore, some 6 some 8.

Later Colchester's 1.5 MOD not sure what they finished up with on the spline though.

Thank you both, Gents. I had a feeling that the later Colchesters, due to their association with Harrison via 600 Group, would have the same type of changewheels. That is to say 1.5 mod and splined drive. Looking at some gears that are for sale on ebay the spline looks the same but of course the dimensions might not be.

Client was not specific about age or Mark of his machine etc. When asked couldn't help as he is away from it's location for a week or so. I had hoped to get some definitive idea before he got back but not to worry.

I've got a Student 1800, can measure the spline for you, but probably Saturday before I get chance.

AFAIK the splined 1.5 mod gears fit all the Colchesters from that era. Student 1800, Triumph 2000, Master 2500. Don't know about the Mascot however, as it's a bigger and more heavy duty lathe.

Dunno if this helps Carl. It's off my Student 1800, so 1.5 MOD

Shaft measures .998" over the splines, and the bore of the gear is .898" Each spline is .250" wide and the gear is .500" thick.

If you were to knock any of these out i would be interested in a 56T gear.

Massive help, thank you very much indeed. The dimensions you give make it the same as a Harrison M series type spline.
