Suitable varnish for MS

Can anyone suggest a suitable clear varnish for polished Mild Steel to stop it rusting.

Someone (can't remember who) has previously recommended Rustins metal lacquer.

Edit: Note that they (Rustins) recommend it for brass, copper, bronze, and silver, with no mention of MS at all. It would be interesting to know why MS is omitted. Maybe they simply expect any steel product to have a protective coating already applied.

Eric,

I have used the lacquer from Rustins on all manner of jobs which must have included mild steel, without apparent ill effects. For small items, dipping works well to leave a nice smooth blemish free surface.

I use acetone 50/50 with Rustins, not too thick a coat, dries fast and lasts well.

Although i haven't tried it , what about clear nail polish thinned with acetone ?

What about 2 pak clear Automotive paint ?

I would never have thought of hair spray !

Melamine pre-catalyzed lacquer is crystal clear – comes as liquid or spray can.

You can thin the liquid with cellulose thinners and paint on.
