The English grammar is apalling….for starters….

The style in which it is written sounds like he is buying the crown jewels not a tailstock…..

My advice would be to steer clear…..

He is asking for to much information…..Bank account details, your home address, home phone number…too much for my liking

I agree that the way it is written sounds more than a bit dodgy but he says pick up will be made by his courier once his cheque has been cleared in your bank. So he will have your name, address, bank and account number but lots of folk will have that and any legit person would need that info. Anyone know – What is the likely scam?

(I must say that I too would be a bit doubtful)

Could be the old cheque clearing scam.

Basically you bank will clear the cheque, but the transaction can be reversed at a later date when the cheque goes back to the issuing bank if there is a problem.

Plenty of time for a tricky transaction between the two.

And, I have heard the trick where the cheque come made out for more than agreed – you are either asked to refund the difference or perhaps they could ask you to ship it for them.

Whatever, the words sound as if you should decline, although I am not an expert (and don't scam people too often devil)

                Good luck – Will

You could tell him you have a free shipping voucher which you can use if he gives you his address by Thursday.

Then pass all detalsl to local police.

Safe option for what? This is a scam & I think a bankers draft can be forged. In genuine cases PayPal can work but even then you can get ripped off

If I read it correctly he says that transportation and maintenance costs will be added to cheque, and this will be used by his transportation company when he collects. To my mind he expects you to pay for the transport in cash. So definitely a NO NO NO.

It's a classic scam, the cheque will clear , only to be returned weeks later as it is a forgery. The money that was once credited into your bank will be removed from your bank account.

Sadly we now live in a world where people don't go and earn a living, they get up and go and scam people. Hello sah , this is Micheal fom Macrosoft Vindows………..

It wasn't the grammar per se that struck me but rather that the respondent's first language doesn't appear to be English. Sounds more oriental to me (the sort of prose you get from an eBay vendor located in China or Hong Kong). As such it doesn't really square with the "James Carter".

                                          I'd run a mile.

A very common scam unfortunately, I thinking is outside eBay rules so no comeback, PayPal safest. I have had this sort of scam, claim to be overseas hence delivery company.

                                              Thats a 100% scam.

Send the one liner " cash on collection only " and you will received no further contact.

I have had similar for my lathe i am selling. Unfortunately Paypal is NOT 100% safe for all sellers. Buyers have 180 days to lodge a claim and this has been part of a scams also.

Payment is made. Goods are collected. Claim then goes in say goods not received. Monies refunded.

Be careful out there, they are after something for nothing.

BACS safest in our books for Lambton type forum situation if both parties are based in the U.K., and provided there is an element of trust between the seller and buyer. This replaces the bankers draft related concerns. Else cash on collection is king.

Cheques have recourse between two to three weeks. In theory, cleared funds should be within 14 days, if cheques issued by one of our well known high street banks. In real life it is another story. We have stopped accepted cheques from new customers.

Most scams we have come across have been from such persons wishing to pay by PayPal. I don't know if the situation has changed within the last few years since we stopped accepting this payment method.

Bandersnatch: The scam is more likely to be of Nigerian type origin, which has this particular grammar style. Oriental – Chinese or Hong Kong style is a different.
