Does anyone have first hand experience in regard to the quality of some of these tools for Myford lathes made in India? Such as this QCTP:

      http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122152684068

Looks okay from the photos. Have also seen a whole bunch of other tools available from there.

On that note does anyone know where the current Myford QCTPs are made and the quality of those?

Have been reading a number of posts around the place on a number of alternative QCTP suppliers. Quite mixed thoughts.

It may well fit your lathe, but some sellers just add 'Myford' to their listings to add value or get more views..

I'm sure somewhere on eBay there is an item: "Stuffed pigeon for sale. Suitable for Myford".

Or adding tag lines such as "well worth a look" Why not let me be the judge of that?

              .

IMHO they are of mixed quality. Even from a supplier that has sold a good product the next batch may be questionable.

So you are sort of 'in the hands of the gods' ………… Which is not much of a useful statement to you is it. indecision

There are some other threads on the forum about toolposts. You will see that for the Dickson style there can be minor problems with getting extra toolholders from a different source, or even the same source a few years later. Not insurmountable but a nuisance.

The ones sold by Chronos for a Myford are the right size for a Myford – that is in terms of block and holder size.

MW agree about the "well worth a look" guy he really irritates me. I'd like to be able to search excluding Myford but then miss all the non-myford stuff.

A problem I have with a fairly cheap Warco QCTP set bought a few years ago. They haven't had spare holders in stock for ages and doesn't look like the ever will.

No idea of quality, but I would be asking if the tool-holding set screws are threaded to the end, or rather if the thread has been removed from the end of them. It looks to me as though they may need machining before use, but cannot be sure (the reason why I would be enquiring!). Or maybe they are hardened?

I bought some a while ago and found that branded myford ones were not that much more expensive than others in sets. Having been bitten a little in the past when they came from Taiwan I decided to get the real thing. The Taiwan ones were not too bad but I realised how much better the Myford ones were when I bought my Boxford. Only problem on that is the tool height they will hold. It came with rather a lot of holders so a change would work out rather expensive.

If Indian microscopes are anything to go buy I would avoid. Too many horror stories on a certain Microscope forum.

There also seems to have been a UK manufacturer producing them. Or was.

Many years ago I purchased a QCTP from Compass House Tools in Rotherfield, East Sussex. Still using it as it seems to be satisfactory. Couple of years ago thought I would like to get 2 or 3 more tool holders when they were @ Guildford but said that design was discontinued.
                              Bugger!
What a good job I had also purchased the better quality kit from the original Myfords while they were still in existence.
Taken out of the box, put back for future and carried on using the Compass House kit.
Will dig out the Myfords QCTP and tool holders and start using them soon.
So, beware buying cheap and twice!

The Indian one is worth a try. I have one on an ML7 (with a Super 7 cross/top slide) and works well. The one I have is from a local OZ supplier :

https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/L280 Some years ago a couple of toolholders were reportedly too hard or had sharp corners in the tool recess which caused breakages. Maybe the user clamped the tool too hard???!!

The Indian one comes with 4 holders against only 2 for a Myford direct from Myford Ltd. On fleabay, the Myford is 124 Quid plus 23 Quid for ea extra tool holder.

The Indian one accepts a tool cutting edge height of max 3/8" on a Super 7 top slide. Not sure if it's the same on a standard 7 slide.

For home use on a small lathe you shouldn't have a problem as the quality of even Indian stuff has improved over the last few years……………… remember what we said about Japan in the years after WW2 and then China of recent years. Some is still junk and some quite good quality.

I’d be interested if anyone know whether the current Myford QTCPs are as good quality as the previous.

Indeed I do usually try and keep that philosophy in regard to buying twice!

Agree with the search strings that sellers put in. That’s a hilarious line. I once succumbed to that, and the lathe was definitely not worth a look – expensive and was in terrible condition.

D Hanna. Thanks for the post – for some reason it wasn't sent to me! Indeed quite a price difference.

Myford are out of stock on their toolholders at the moment anyway.

Out of interest, found this when trawling through the net, anyone have any experience with this company "Myford Solutions" and it's tools? Not a lot of information on it but the unit looks similar.
