Hello,i am in the process of restoring a Myford ML6.capstan turret lathe.

It seems to be complete but came with an I'll fitting 4jaw chuck with slightly different thread than the nose.i think it's a 1 1/4"unf.

http://www.lathes.co.uk. has not much info on the ML6. But looking at the few pictures I am needing a nose nut? Of some kind and a type of collet? Any information would be appreciated.pictures to follow.

i have an early one, but it's in storage at min due to losing workshop.

if i remember rightly the thread is closer to 2 " i did ask bit since but no one was sure.

the one mod i was going to do was make adaptor to fit chuck so i could do hex bar and square bar.

somewhere i have drawings i did to make my own collets for it, made set from 5mm to 16 mm.

look in my albums couple of pics there.

A set of screw cutting gauges will soon tell you what the thread is. You'll need a set that covers UNC and BSW. The difference in flank angles is pretty obvious when checked against the light.

Guessing; would expect thread to be Whit form, rather than UNC. Thats what they used on the ML7 and the like

Thanks for your replies,i have had it confirmed the thread is 1 1/4" x12 tpi.unf.on the nose!

I ran a tap through the chuck backplate and it fits .

So,any ideas how to obtain or make a nose nut?or any info on the collet size? would be appreciated……thanks.

The fit of the chuck on to the spindle is determined more by the fit of the plain register collar on the spindle into the corresponding recess in the chuck backplate. The thread can be quite loose, indeed usually is, in fit and it is the register that locates the chuck backplate.

You might be best off to make up a nut that fits your spindle thread and register takes ER32 collets and standard ER32 clamping nut. Plenty of info on the net about ER32 standard dimensions. Once you turn the internal thread and register in one end, turn it around screw it on the spindle and machine the ER32 taper and thread in place, all nice and concentric.

The Myford ml6. spindle has no register collar and was never intended to take a chuck. But as it was purchased with an ill-fitting chuck I decided to at least improve on what I had.

The spindle has a long tube running through it and is about 19mm.diameter.also no internal taper exists.this tube is moved by the quick release actuator located at the other end.

I would assume the collet would be similar and parallel to fit inside the spindle.?

Not much info on Lathes.co.uk.so I was hoping to restore it and post some quality pictures for Tony's website.it seems just trying to find a collet nut to fit is impossible.

                      Thanks again for your reply.

not sure we have same lathe.

thread on mine is 1.8" and 12 tpi whit.

the od of collet section that fits into spindle is 1.22" widest point is 1.47"

will still do drawings if you want.

i have spare blank collets that my 8 yr old made when i had workshop if you want one as pattern.

                                where are you?

have look in my album some pics in there of mine.

Hi,and thanks for the offer, but my spindle nose it 1and1/4"x12. tpi UNF. and not the usual myford 1and 1/8×12 tpi.
The bore is 3/4" and has a tube passing through it.this can be pushed towards collet via a sprung lever and cone type fitting at that other end.?
                                  Definitely a Myford ML6.
Seems it's quite a rare item! And no info on Google either!
                                  Best regards,colin.
