My new Boxford STS 10 20 lathe landed today. Couple of hours to get it off the pallet and into position and all looks well.
Bit of tidying up to do as expected but the machine looks sound and should be fine. I’m going to read the manual now before I do anything with her, I know it’s a first but I’ve never had a machine with the manual included before. Mick

hang on , is this the one you had two off last week or is it another one on top of the herd, or was it a virtual lathe last week?

Try and keep up Bazyle lol.
This is the replacement for my Raglan which will be advertised in due course. It is now my second Boxford X10. They stand facing each other so I can turn round 180 degrees to use either machine. D1 3 Cam lock spindle and I’m going to fit a multifix tool post so I can use the same tool carriers on each lathe.
There is just a lot of end float in the lead screw so I’m going to investigate that to find the adjustment.
There was a cardboard box in the base with 8 Jones and shipman 1/4 hss tool holders, morse adaptors and a boring bar amongst other things. I’m a happy boy indeed.

                .

                I have the same lathe.

Overall I am very happy with it. smiley – I have had to replace a few things on it, but as I paid a very, very low price for it initially I have zero complaints. These were previous owner abuse related not down to the machine.

Be aware though that 2nd hand spares very seldom raise their heads and the price list of spares on the Boxford site need to be multiplied by about 3 as they have not been updated for eons of years.

As to the manual. If you make me a copy I will furnish you with any costs plus send you a box of Jaffa cakes and a big sloppy wet kiss.!!! surprisewinkwink

Adjusting end float on the X10 is relatively simple if nothing is actually broken or badly worn; I did it on my similarly-afflicted machine. The adjustment is achieved by adjusting a screw. If you look at your manual, 03/12 illustration (p.13 in my manual), look for 03/011 top-hat section of sheet steel. A screw hides under the top central hole. If you look at the other 03/12 illustration, showing the internals of the gearbox, on the left-hand side of the illustration find the upper M6 x 12 cheese-head screw . UNSCREW this – it bears against the inside of the top-hat section – to reduce end play. If the top hat section is badly bulged you may need to remove it and batter it flat again. I did!

                  Hope that helps.

Nigel thanks for the heads up on the end float. Turns out the support bearing bracket at the tailstock end had been bored out oversize for a new bearing and no end plug was fitted. So I think that may have caused the end float perhaps. I will have a look later and report back. Mick

I love Boxford gear, sturdy kit. I also have the issue of the high price of replacement parts

I have tried several times to get the necessary bits from boxford and it’s like pulling teeth. Going to ring direct and try again rather than mailing them. The new lathe is great but there is a 13mm difference in centre height between my 10 20 and the training lathe so I can’t swap between tool posts as easily as I hoped.
