Having replaced the headstock belt on my Super7 I adjusted the spindle bearings as per Myford's instructions. Facing across a piece of 4" FCMS I was not happy with the finish I was getting. I then re adjusted the bearings having read some of the hints and tips on tinternet. I then ran the lathe for a little while and noticed that the tumbler reverse was a little on the noisy side, I hoped that this would settle down after a little while, no such luck, smoke coming from the cover. On examination I found the adjusting collar was rubbing on one of the tufnol gears this generated a deal of heat hence the smoke. The spindle is nice and free so appears not to have any influence. Ideas guys?  My original idea was to turn a chamfer on the gears so missing the adjuster but it should not need this and I just wondered if this was a common problem.

Do you mean the split collar on the end of the spindle. Are you sure that the spindle is in contact with the front bearing?

            Dusty,

"turn a chamfer on the gears so missing the adjuster "

Do NOT do this – as you say it should not be needed.
Assuming the problem did not exist before you removed the spindle then clearly you have not put things back quite right. I guess the split collar is now too far to the rear. Please read the Myford instructions again and ensure you do things in the correct order. It is easy to upset the rear positions of the rear bearings when removing the spindle so always attend to getting the preload on them correct first by adjusting the split collar. Then attend to the front bronze bush settings.

Having had lunch and forty winks, I am going to slack everything off and try again. Martin, yes it is the split collar that is the problem. I used the tailstock to provide pressure to seat on the bronze bush whilst adjusting the split collar. I got it so I had the spindle which I could not turn and then backed it off so it would then turn. Adjusted the castellated rings, at this stage the spindle was a little on the stiff side which after a few minutes running became nice and free when it had settled down. Then the trouble started. I have to say the split adjuster is very very stiff on my lathe. Next instalment in a couple of hours. Thanks for your help. Eric, you are of course right it must be something I have done.

I don't think you should need to involve the tailstock at all.

                This is what I do.

The gospel according to Malcolm (at the old Myfords Nottingham)

                1. Power Down

                2. Remove all belt tension.

                3. Remove Chuck

                4. Rotate RH collar one complete turn. (top towards you).

                5. Rotate LH collar one complete turn. (top towards you).

Spindle should be completely free of front bush.

6.Loosen allen screw on collar at end of spindle.

                7. Using the Allen key tighten collar as tight at it will go by hand.
Inner tapered roller races are now locked together with correct pre-load.

                8. Back off LH collar one complete turn + a bit (top away from you)

                9. Rocking the spindle by holding the spindle nose tighten the RH collar by hand (top away from you).

                10. When you feel resistance to movement stop.

                11. Collar should be just tight enough that spindle can just be moved by hand holding the nose.

                12. Do up the LH collar by hand (top towards you).
You should still feel resistance when turning the spindle by the nose.

                13. With the crescent wrench on the LH collar tap the end smartly with a 12oz hammer.
The spindle should move forwards by a couple of tenths and be completely free running.

                14. With the lathe running slowly (lowest direct speed) put the oil gun in the front oil cup and pump until oil issues from the front bearing.

                15. All should be sweetness and light with great rejoicing in heaven and on the earth.

                Hope this helps

Martin sweetness and light has been restored, the rejoicing will come a little later with a glass of amber nectar from north of the border. I sat and thought about what I had been doing before starting this afternoon. The problem was I had not backed off the left hand collar enough so was tightening the outer races against it. Now having read your last post confirmed what I had just done was right. The only difference was the tap with the hammer had not been used. I have just spent half an hour with the lathe running setting it to turn parallel. Now turns within 0.00005 over 5" well that's what my mike says, no smoke, no untoward noises. I can now get down to doing something useful. Thanks
