Yes, Andrew is correct. I had a mental backfire and stated it the wrong way round. Above rated speed the power is more or less constant and the torque reduces. Below rated speed the torque is constant and the power is reduced.

Thanks CE, I was working it out backwards, so to get the 2000rpm top spindle speed you must be running the motor at about double its base speed? 1440×0.67 = 965 so 2000/965 = 2.07

The current inverter versions of these lathes use a separate cooling fan that comes on with the power to the lathe.

My 280V uses a 1.5kw motor and only uses 1 belt, I'm not sure how long the belt will last as it's only a small section but it seems to handle large diameter work without slip so far.

Bowber, out of interest what sort or pully sizes do the new inverter drive ones come with, a photo or the layout with cover removed would be nice if its not too much trouble.

When I bought my 280VF which was one of the first into the country a lot of people poo pood the varible speed and in particular the control boards and I said at the time I would go for 3-phase motor and inverter if it ever failed so its still an option though touch wood I have not had major problems.
