Thank you all for your efforts. Brian, I'll try those two surge protectors.,Danny, I think your suggestion is the only positive method if you know a storm is coming. SOD, I'm in the tropical bit of North Wales about 300 mtrs altitude and not more than a mile from the Zip World attraction. That unit from RS might not be too expensive when you consider the replacement costs for phones and PC. Hugh, thank you,I'll PM my details . Nathan

I was altering the electronic timer on my central heating. There was a huge flash and bank and the timer disintegrated around my finger!. Bits flew everywhere! There had been a lightning strike about 20 yards from my house. Very scarey.

        Andrew.

          Question from an electrical ignoramus:

am I right in thinking that none of the above applies to a fibre phone connection eg Virgin?

Afraid not! The connection to the house from the Virgin cabinet is still in copper, two parts a co-axial cable for the TV/broadband and a standard telephone cable, the two cables are bonded together into a figure of 8 type which comes up the street to the house. Don't know about BT fibre to the premises though,

            John

            Edit: Typo

              Thanks for this, Journeyman.

My phone was knocked out during a storm some years ago. When I rang the insurance company they seemed very sceptical about the idea that lightning was the cause but I never pursued a claim as the excess was more than the cost of repair/replacement.

SOD, I'm in the tropical bit of North Wales about 300 mtrs altitude …

That might explain it, apart from the tropical bit. (I've been to Bangor!) The height and general openness of that part of Wales mean that any cross-country overhead wiring is likely to attract lighting. Hill walkers are more likely to get zapped than ordinary folk for the same reason.

I wonder if population density is against you too. I've a notion that a surge effecting 1000 households would be much reduced by their collective protections compared with the same surge reaching a hamlet of 10 homes.

Also, if you have a density of 0 house per km2 (say) com[pared with 1000, then if a house gets hit its 100 time more likely to be you.

It's not often I get the chance to correct Neil's maths, but with zero houses shouldn't the answer be infinity more times more likely?

                    90% of statistics are wrong…

PS. More likely Neil's mistake is a typo, not his maths. His most recent MEW editorial has a 'their/there' mix-up and I'd bet big money he knows the difference. It's amazing what the eye skates over whilst proof-reading!

                      Grrr.

Well with 1 house, if a house gets hit its inevitable it will be yours.

I'm not sure the situation of 1 house being hit when there are zero houses applies

How do you console a pedant?

This deserves a Gold Star for going off-topic. We've got from a perfectly sensible Windows 10 question to discussing the probability of zero houses per sq km being struck by lightning. Not only is it nonsense in itself but our answers differ by the maximum amount possible. Neil thinks the probability is zero, I think it is infinity.

Nathan, got your message. Will be contact when I get home tomorrow.

If you are a golfer then get the 1 iron out a wave it around during the storm, even God can't hit a 1 iron.

Used to watch great thunderstorms in your area when staying on my uncles farm on Anglesey. Could stay up all night watching the lighting.
