A friend of mine has offered to machine a casting for my 3" Burrell clack, I have a drawing but the angle is not marked. We thought we could use the same angle as the print but my friend say's is he did use that angle the foot ( the part that bolts to boiler) of the clack would not be of equal thickness. Anyone machined one of these and can remember what angle they used or suggestion please

Looks like arcsin (1.5/3) to me which is 30 degrees. Hopefully someone will confirm before you cut metal.

The drawing clearly shows 30 degrees at point of contact with the 1/8" hole..

From your question it appears the casting may not a good one or you have to fettle it to give a equal thickness foot?

Don't forget to write 30 degrees on the drawing rather than relying on the obscure 3" rad and the 1.5" height.

Hi, I know it's been answered, but just to confirm Duncan Webster's answer; 1.5/3 equals 0.5, which is 30 in the Natural Sine table, or on your calculator with Trig function, 1.5 / Sin 30 = 3, or 3 x Sin 30 = 1.5

                    Regards Nick.

I agree! I know it's bad practice to duplicate dimensions on drawings unnecessarily, but the radius and height method seems cryptic to me. Writing 30 degrees on the plan would have been kind to this Bear of Little Brain!

The hole is at 30 degrees, but the face shown is curved to match that radius, so both sets of figures are important.

I cannot see where that curved face should end up relative to the rest of the drawing, somebody show me, please. Is it relative to the 5/8" dimension from the centre bore?

It is a lot easier to mark the position of that component on the side of the boiler either by locating the top or ctr line and then scribing a line 1.5" up or down. Not so easy to work out the radial position of 30 deg. from the "open" middle of a copper tube.

Also the x and y positions allow you to set a boring head to the correct relative position to te casting so you can cut the convex flange

It would make more sense if you saw the curved flange just out of view on the right that allows the clack to be fixed to the radius of the boiler.
