Yeah i'll wait for the surveillance van in the morning, let them in for a cup of tea, if they've had a hard night of work spying on my sleep.

Hi today I visited the Wheeting Steam Engine Rally **LINK** This is the first time I've been to it in about five years and it is just as good as it has always been. Lots of different things to see and various trade stands to suite just about everyone. I managed to get a nice second hand small machine vice with a lever clamping arrangement for £25.00 and a 6" faceplate for a fiver, which I think will fit the Myford M type lathe that I have, and I also got a 12" x 10" x 5mm thick piece of brass plate for £15.00.

            I took a few photos.

There's a few more in this album **LINK** for those who are interested.

            Regards Nick.

Talking about spooks. FWIW I know someone in 'merca who, 15 or 16 years ago, put up a webpage which was very sarcastic and derogatory to the then POTUS, good ole Dubya. Within a couple of days he had a visit from an official spooks department, telling him that if he didn't take his page down, there would be (unspecified) serious consequences. The spooks must have been real, because they were wearing sunnies, and were "wired for sound".

                    Paranoia abounds!!

This morning, on a whim, I bought [for not very much] an old 'BOC Saffire Lightweight' welding torch.

Question: Is it possible/realistic/safe to convert this to burn a Propane+Air mixture instead of Oxy+Acetylene.

… probably a daft idea, but it's light & well balanced, so I thought it might be worth experimenting.

Please feel free to stop me !!

                          MichealG,

I use a Saffire Leightweight when I OA weld, I would guess that the nozzle size would need to increase with Propane, but have not tried it (yet). Let us know how you get on please.

Also advisable to change the hose to a propane one as it can damage acetylene hoses if they came with it.

… No hoses with it, so my 'default' would probably have been propane hose anyway.

Hi Michael, I would say a cautionary no. In O/A welding torches, the two gasses pass through a calibrated by design mixer before they reach the nozzle. With propane the air is drawn in and mixed in the nozzle again by calibrated design. The characteristics of acetylene and propane are widely different. Acetylene is the most explosive gas there is, but a propane explosion expands five times its volume. If you are going to experiment, I'd advise you to be extremely careful. I for one would not even try.

                                Regards Nick.

                                  Thanks for your thoughts, Nick,

Does this give you any comfort ?

… Or am I missing some important point ?

I should mention that I was thinking in terms of low-pressure regulated Propane, and pumped Air, to achieve the same sort of effect as a Jeweller's blowpipe. … That said: I know next to nothing about Welding torches [which is, of course, why I am seeking advice].

                                  Thanks again

I use a "Smiths Little Torch" on propane and oxygen for small scale silver soldering, it appears to mix the gases inside the body of the piece just like my Saffire O/A torch which i agree is light and easy in the hand. The Smiths torch is available for acetylene and oxygen use with the only difference appearing to be the hose to bottle connection. Smiths

I have never used blown air and definitely don't have the lungs for the Saffire!.

Been going to make these for a while, loosing grip in my right hand so having difficulty operating my Myford collet chuck in particular, among other things, so cannibalised an old pair of pliers to make them fit the collet nut, see the pics. Not pretty but functional, steel outer lied with alloy.

blush … I expressed that rather poorly, Andy

What I meant was that I would be expecting to use Air from a mechanical blower [pump], rather than Oxygen from a bottle.

I then compounded the felony, by mentioning the blowpipe.

… I think it's probably time for some sleep.

                                                Something similar …

I was in a Drive Thru at MacDonald's with my daughter. We were handed our meals in a bag.

"Can I have some Serviettes? I asked the young lad

"We don't do those" He said.

"You must do" I said (getting puzzled).

"It's not on the menu" He said (blankly)

"Serviettes! You must still do those" I said (getting slightly irritated)

                                                "What are Serviettes" He said.

"Things to wipe your hands with" I said (now going into a state of shock)

"Oh, you mean Napkins! I've never heard them called Serviettes" He said (handing me far too many).

That's it, I'm old. I can't communicate with the young any more.

George, no C spanner these are the original morse taper 2 collets that Myford supplied and its a knurled nut only. Never was a problem but this last couple of years my RH grip is getting worse, more for releasing the collet than tightening. Age related so not a lot one can do except find a solution!

Also have a set of ER collets and no problem there !

That's it, I'm old. I can't communicate with the young any more.

Nothing to do with age, Steve. You're server was clearly doing a job in the Eton school holidays ( U and non-U) wink
