Just out of total boredom I actually tuned into a TV channel that had no scary news stories and found myself watching a movie that was based on a traction engine.

I never realised just how big the machines actually are. Not sure about bashing the valve thingy with a large hammer is best practice though.

Remembered the name of the movie and found a linky The Iron Maiden

      * Danny M *

I watched that movie on TV when I was a kid, was thrilled when I saw it in real life at a steam fair at St Athan (probably) and later I got a book 'Steam on the Road' with a picture of it in, all as a lad.

One of my favourites is a series on Youtube called 'Project Binky' – readers of Terry Pratchett will understand – where two, um, enthusiasts are trying to shoehorn a turbo-charged 2 litre 4 wheel drive power plant from a Toyota Celica into a 1980 Mini. I'm not a rally car enthusiast at all, but it's kept me hooked through 28 episodes so far. Lots of very dry humour and some very impressive engineering.

That would be Talking Pictures TV (Freeview Channel 81) at a guess? I find it excellent – no connection other than as a very satisfied customer

Thanks for all these suggestions, I'm going to share many of them in the next MEW as I think non-forum readers might well benefit from them.

What an excellent film, my apprenticeship involved using the round headstock student and the square headstock, I worked in Sudbury Suffolk, not far from Colchester and later in my employ I used to sent the engineering school Lathes to Curtis machine tools nr colchester for complete rebuilds and lathe bed grinding.

Much as I'm sure folks will only post links to 'decent' videos, can I suggest people give a guide to content for the timid?

                        Thanks

I don't think anyone has nominated Clickspring yet? Brilliant craftsman.

                            Numberphile is very good.

                              Some of my favourite Youtubers

Uri Tuchman – An eccentric model maker (calls himself a discount clickspring)

Doubleboost – General workshop meddling (with swearing)

Shaun Hughes Engraving – Engraving obviously

Colin Furze – Crazy inventions (Imagine if top gear did engineering)

Dan Gelbart – Very knowledgeable German engineer

Steve Jordan – More General workshop stuff

JohnnyQ90 – RC car and small engine modifications

Made in Poland – Builds all his own workshop machinery

Things are getting seriously throttled on my BT connection over the last week or so

I'm lucky to even log in during the day at the moment, and that's in a capital city with the network upgrades
