I don't know of a Stephenson's simulator for a computer but modelled my engine in 3D CAD and can manipulate the model to check any scenario. I can raise/lower the Stephenson's link, rotate the crankshaft to any angle and check slide valve position.

          Paul.

Thank you but I'm not into CAD. I wondered if any of the simulators could be run on a mac.

I'm not a Mac user but can't a Mack simulate a PC and run PC programs, even at a reduced efficiency ?

On a Mac you load a program called Crossover, and that will run all manner of DOS written code within a specific window. Crossover costs a few pounds (i.e. not much) and although there are free alternatives they require a bit more thought to run. You can get all this information by searching the web. Ask for things like 'run windows programs on Mac' but you do not need a full windows emulator.

Then there are a few valve simulators to download. Although most are Walschaerts I know that the Dockstader has Stephensons. Search for 'walschaerts stephensons valve simulators'.

This is a link to DON ASHTON'S STEAM LOCOMOTIVE VALVE GEARS.

which has links to simulators including one on Excel format. You will need a program that reads MS Excel files.

Thanks for the help folks. I'll look into getting a programme to run windows but i've remembered an old windows laptop I've got somewhere so I may just try to crank it up.
