Unusual problem with 3D printer

The 3D printer (Creality Ender 3) sits on top of a sideboard next to a window. Cat spends a lot of time lying on window sill.

I have not done much 3D printing, mainly because I am finding it hard to get to grips with 3D CAD, but today I wanted to print a design from Thingiverse.

No plastic being extruded – the ***** cat has pulled the filament out and bitten off two pieces about a foot long and the natural springiness of the PLA made it look as if it was going through the printer while in fact it was just butting up to the place it enters the drive rollers!

OK I should have noticed, but who else could this have happened to?

Perhaps not all the cat’s fault. PLA goes brittle if it picks up moisture and can break very easily, especially when bent (or straightened from a curve).

This has happened to me without feline assistance, in fact the car is quite likely innocent (although if I know cats it is guilty of something) . The longer the PLA is left the more brittle it becomes, and it always snaps at the point it enters the extruder drive as this is where it is under stress.

I now watch it starting to print before turning my back it.

First skin your cat. There are lots of ways to do this…..

Yep, this happens spontaneously in humid weather.

The shock of first fracture sometimes causes a second.
