It would answer the question if you were to make a purchase off eBay AND the invoice shipped with the goods also showed this VAT number.

There is a very large tax avoidance scheme currently in operation by Chinese suppliers, mainly focused on eBay & Amazon. I just about basically understand it but not in a way that I could re-explain it, if that makes sense.

UKPL might stand for UK Partner Larger, & it might be there to satisfy either Ebay or HMRC concerns?

A quick Google, this might explain the situation :

      https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/4/17796118/amazon-ebay-chinese-sellers-tax-fraud-haven

      https://www.ft.com/content/8fcf026e-38e0-11e8-8b98-2f31af407cc8 (Whoops, paywall)

      .

      Thanks for that, Mick yes

        I asked a question:

        你在产品概述中提到UKPL。请问UKPL是什么意思?

        and I have an answer:

        亲爱的顾客您好
        通过询问我们产品的开发人员,我们确认了UKPL没有任何意义。由于我们的失误使得我们产品的标题出现了错误,谢谢您为我们指正,非常感谢。

Hello, dear customer. By asking the developers of our products, we confirmed that UKPL doesn't make any sense. As our mistake made the title of our product wrong, thank you for pointing out for us, thank you very much.

I have been looking at metal lens-hoods, as a convenient source of threaded tube

This one, for example, has 52mm male, and 58mm female threads:

So far, so good … But could someone please decipher 'UKPL'

[ it features on quite a few ebay listings, not just that one ]

dont know AcronymFinder suggests : United Kingdom Paintball League

                      .

                      MichaelG.

I cannot help decoding the acronym after reading this thread I did learn a little bit about how these Chinese sellers operate.

Against my better judgement I still continue to purchase some items from sellers I do not trust. I have been bitten a couple of times so now only buy if I am prepared to not get the item or not use it if it arrives. One only has to look at the negative feedback of this one seller that Michael has linked to (42 negative in the last month alone!) to know that most of the eBay listing is plain lies. There must be thousands of eBay sellers that list items as 'UK stock' but say their location is 'UK', 'Liverpool', 'Essex' etc but then show an unreadable business in China. I presume there must be Chinese owned 'fulfilment' centres in various locations in the UK which actually make up the shipments.

Like most things in life, eBay is not what it was, whilst eBay purport to have strict rules and regulations they certainly do not impose them, if anything they err on the side of the dodgy sellers rather than the man in the street.

                      Whinge over

Whether this supplier uses one I know not, but HMRC has clamped down as it appears some companies were not paying their VAT bills, but instead closing down and reappearing under a new name.

Under new rules the fulfilment houses pass the VAT direct to HMRC.

                        That's my understanding, I may be wrong…

I confess I buy imported gewgaws from eBay, but only if I can wait for it and the cost is small enough it doesn't matter if it never arrives or is junk. Strangely the electronics and 3D printer bits seem to be OK, but I've had 'joke value only' when buying cheap drills or cutters.

It's not come out quite right, Neil. Among other infelicities, "£1,000,000美元" reads "£1000 American dollars".
