Tom Senior M1 refurb

Finished stripping, cleaning, painting and rebuilding my TS. All back together and it looks great. For the interested amongst you here are the key facts:

1. Rewired the original motor from star to delta, as detailed in a separate thread (thanks to all for the good advice), so it can run with a 1P-3P inverter.
2. Completely stripped it down except for the spindle (later job to regrease). Stripped the base and chip tray back to bare metal then primed and painted with TS green. The column and rear cover I just paint stripped and rubbed down because there is a thick layer of bituminous substance over which was presumably applied on production to even out the rough casting for a smooth finish.
3. Degreased the knee, saddle and table as much as possible and repainted where practicable.
4. The mill is #195, made in 1946, so I was expecting some wear, but only 4 thou runout along the table in the X direction and 1thou in the Y. About 20 thou backlash in the saddle but a hefty 100 thou in the table X travel. The leadscew looks OK so I guess thst a new nut may be in order at some point.
5. Having completely reassembled it I now know why several people advised me to get a 3" thick steel riser for the column base (which I ignored of course) because there is practically no clearance between the vice and vertical head!
6. If you are putting it against a wall make sure that there is space for the rear cover to open – thought of this but alas not enough clearance to insert the drawbar for the horizontal arbor so will have to get a bitmof threaded rod to put in from the front!

I now need to get some cutters and a collet for the vertical head, thinking ER 25 or 32 but mindful of the vertical clearance.

I have a later '73 M1 with the 30INT horizontal taper, no Knuckle vertical head like yourself, BUT has the quill feed 2MT Senior "S" vertical head c/w genuine Senior attachment plate that bolts over the dovetails. This has decent head room in the Z axis.

Lucky you to have the S type head.

I ran out of flat surfaces to put the bits on so the vice and table power drive still need to be done – now that I have the workshop back I will get to it . . .

A mon tour de faire la même chose. J'ai pu acquérir en 2018, une Tom Senior M1.

Comme je viens de partir à la retraite, je vais pouvoir la restaurer.

J'aurais vraiment besoin de vos conseils et votre aide pour mener à bien ce projet.

Vous donné de l'espoir, concernant le moteur, je souhaiterai recevoir des informations pour le re-cabler en étoile pour pouvoir l'utiliser avec un vfd.

suggest remove the swivel base from the vise,that will give a bit more spindle clearance.I had one of these a long time ago,very good sturdy mill ,absolutely spoilt by limited vert spindle headroom.I made a castiing to raise the column ,but never did fit it,bought a turret mill instead and sold the TS.

Nigel is correct about the swivel base for the vise, only fit it when you intend to use it. We have two Bison 100mm vises at the museum, one came with the drill mill and the other I bought at a bargain price new with a swivel base. Mike was using the Tom Senior with the newer vise, and I was using the drill mill with the older one with the swivel base fitted to it for the first time. I lined up the scale as close as I could, (the base has keys) and the rear jaw had a run of 0.004" in the full 100mm width. That shows just how good Bison are, the heights are only 0.0005" different too.
