I have been making some M3 castle nuts which will require split pins when fitted.

What is the preferred method to make tiny split pins

Well you could by 1/32" ones (0.8mm) which is about right for a 3mm or 1/8" shaft from the usual ME suppliers

If you want to make your own then in the past I have filed 0.5mm steel wire down to half thickness and then bent to shape. A shallow Vee milled into some flat bar holds the while while you file it.

Finished job through 1/16" diameter pins

Thanks , I did not realise you could buy them that small . That said I think mine will need to be

a little smaller than 1/32 so I will get some wire.

              Thanks for the offer Chris

One trick that I have used is to cut a length of wire and hold it under tension in a piercing saw frame. You can then draw file the wire to the required section before cutting and forming.

David, that's OK, I have several boxes I will never use, hence the offer.
