I hope I don’t get nuked for posting a ‘commercial’ thread.

i BEG INDULGENCE AS THIS IS OFFERED AS A HELP-OUT TO PEOPLE, NOT AS A PROFIT MAKING EXERCISE.

There has been a bit of interest in a ‘kit of parts’ for n LED tachometer, including a pre-programmed microchip. It would have 20mm high green four-digit LED display (unless demand was for another colour).

I am looking into the cost of buying sufficient parts for 10 kits, in which I would supply all components including a home-brew pcb except, wire, power supply (use an old 5V phone charger) and case.

I anticipate the cost would be about £15 all in. It might be cheaper.

If you are interested, please let me know. If it happens, I will do the design work etc. and board making over the Christmas break.

          Hello Neil.

          I’m interested.
Problem is I’m in Portugal and, at the moment, I don’t how I can pay You.

Best regards and thanks in advance

                Hi Neil,
Please add me to the list, I have wanted something along these lines for a while now (too lazy to work out the belt configuration) so I think this will be just the ticket.
                Look forward to hearing more.

                  Hi All,

I found some good displays eventually, but ‘ll do a bit more digging.

                    Hi Neil,
Farnell do some four digit displays (AVEGO HDSP-B04G) These have a colon instead of decimal points. The ones in the range with decimal points are only 3 1/2 digits.
Rapid (rapidonline.com) do have some true four digit ones with decimal points. This information is from nearly two years ago when I was doing the parts list for my tacho design.
                    Les.

i would be interested too, as most of the kits i have seen need the chips to be programmed

You can buy panel mount 4 digit frequency meters on ebay for around £10. One of these and a 60 hole disc encoder and optical sensor will read directly in rpm.
Even cheaper is a cycle cumputer, see

                          Hi Neil,

One of the features of Les’s design (here) is the use of an Allegro gear sensor. On my ML7 it just sits there next to the bull-wheel with its unhelpfully-numbered 55 teeth and happily tells me the rpm, while putting out 1 pulse per rev, should I want the DRO to do some sums and calculate the surface speed. No messing with slotted disks nor reflective surfaces …

                          Happy soldering!

                            Hi all,
I am prepared to program the PIC16F628A if anyone wants to build my design. I have never got around to creating a PCB layout so you would have to use stripboard or do your own PCB layout.

PS The one that “harold” (John) built is a slightly modified version as he requested the extra one pulse per rev output. (I think for use with a DRO350)

                            Les.

Mine uses a little high-powered magnet, this helps as you can use it to measure the revs of anything within its range.

I will look on Farnell for the 4-digit displays – they have helpfully made their search even harder to use!

Hi, everyone, i am new to this site, but i am interested in building a few tachos but i hav`nt a clue with electronics. Neil have you got yours sorted out yet? i have been looking at 4 number lcd`s from this company http://uk.mouser.com/optoelectronics/Displays/LCD-Displays/LCD-Numeric-Display-Modules/
i dont know if they are suitable but good prices.

Any help and advice from anyone please, would be a great help, i want to use a hall sensor to pick up the spindle counting 1 signal/rev seams the simplest to me after racking my brain for a few days and trying to come to grips with all the different methods advised on the internet. Not so suseptable to iron being picked up on magnets or having to clean white, or reflective marks on spindles.

I look forward to hear from anyone, best wishes to all

                                            Hi Paul,
The DRO350 already has a built in tachometer. All you need is a photo sensor or a Hall effect sensor. If you want it to work with more than one pulse per rev I have a modified version of my tachometer that also has an output of one pulse per rev. (Someone requested this modification I assume to use with a DRO350.)

                                            Les.
