Does anyone have any experience of replacing the headstock bearings on a Clarke CL500M or one of its clones? I have had my machine for over fifteen years and its given good service, but recently the headstock bearings have “tightened up”, i.e shortly after starting up a significant drag develops and I have to stop work in case the motor burns out. I took this as a sign that the bearings were nearing the end of their working life and needed replacing so started to dismantle the headstock. I’ve now reached the stage where I’m left with the main shaft and the two main bearings but don’t see how to go further. Presumably the shaft needs to be pressed or driven out, but, with no professional engineering exprerience, I’m not sure how this can be done without damaging something. Can anyone help?

Incidentally I may have discovered the cause of the original problem – see my other posting
