Hi all how good are the miniature drills from Proxxon (micromot 50/E) comparing with dremel?

I do not use Dremel so I cannot make a comparison but this Proxxon is good for light work, it has a low powered motor but a good spindle bearing with no axial movement. It is not to heavy for the hand to be used a long time and therefore can be an alternative for flexible shafts. The smallest diameter you can clamp in the collets that come with it is 0.7 mm, for smaller diameters you have to make your own collets. Niko.

I have both the Dremel and a Micromot BFW 40/E. The Dremel, although useful for some jobs, is a toy in comparison.

Being daft I have a 25 year old Dremel, a cheap Dremel clone, and a Proxxon IBS/E.

The Dremel has worked fairly well for it's life, reliable and very useful, within it's limitations, which are few. One limitation which induced me to buy the Proxxon was the Dremels spindle play when using it as a toolpost grinder. The Dremel was usable but only just. The Proxxon has a better spindle arrangement, which reduces this effect. It doesn't eliminate it. I think that a "proper" toolpost grinder may be required to get good toolpost grinding.

The Proxxon is definitely quieter and smoother than the Dremel.

The Proxxon has better quality collets (hardened steel) compared to the Dremel (brass or Al. Alloy). There are about 5 or 6 Proxxon collets, covering the same range as the 3 or 4 Dremel ones. From memory the range is from about 1.0mm up to 3.5mm.

I'm thinking that it's down to what you want, the Proxxon is definitely better than the Dremel, but not by a huge margin, but it's about 1/2 the price of the Proxxon. The freely available "clone" Dremel is /was about 1/2 the cost of the Dremel, and is noticeably lower quality in pretty much every area, although it's still useful.

So it's pretty much a case of "you pay the money and you take your choice"!!

              Best of luck

              cheers

              Bill

I have both a micromot 50/e and an IBS/E, the 50/e is a low voltage drill so it needs a separate power supply, when I bought mine I thought I could use my existing bench power supply. The output from the Proxxon power supply is rectified ac, the speed control switches it to control the speed. Feed it with smoothed dc and you only get full speed.

The IBS/E operates on 240 vac, it is very smooth and quiet in operation. The 50/e has more torque at the bottom end of the speed range compared to the IBS/E. They are both better quality than the offerings from Dremel but a Dremel will get the job done no doubt.

As Bill said, "you pay the money ……

                Regards,

                Michael

I bought an IBS/E about a year ago to replace an old Dremel and am very pleased with it. In my opinion much better quality than the Dremel. I find the mains powered one more convenient than the low voltage one.

My advice would be to go for the Proxxon if you can afford it.

                  Russell.

I bought my Micromot BFW 40/E from Voelkner in Germany even with postage to UK I saved about 30 quid.

I've bought proxon stuff from germany as well, saves a fortune. Why are we expected to pay over the odds? I even asked 2 UK suppliers if they were prepared to match the German price, one ignored me, the other was 'brusque'.

It only took a few days to arrive, but you have to change the plug oh dear.

HELP Ok all the stuff Arrived today but if anyone has the keyless chuck (part number 28941) can you enlighten me first thing is there 2 parts to it as there does not seem to be anything to push the jaws closed. It screws on to the drill where the Collet nut has been removed and tightens to dead stop.

Ignore last post. It needs a collet to push the jaws closed.
