when tempering home made piston rings should they be cooled quickly or slowly ? U tube videos show both methods ,

The heating simply removes any ‘set’ the rings had when made. They will retain the new shape on cooling, so it makes no difference. Only when heated again, will they lose that ‘set’ and only then if their shape were changed physically. Hopefully they never would, in their usable lifetime.

I would think that slower cooling would, if anything, be better than quenching – less chance of distortion.

I always cool mine as slowly as possible. Also make sure you heat them evenly otherwise they will move at the hottest point first and you will get egg shaped rings.

thanks for the information , I heat treated them today with slow cooling and am very pleased with the result , , gapped them and they fit perfectly . remarkable !!!!!!!!!!
