None of the old albums from the old forum software exist any more although photos from them are still within posts.

Are you expecting to find photos in an Album as provided by the old forum? The new forum doesn’t store images that way, they go straight into posts.

That the new forum didn’t maintain albums in the same way was highlighted before the transfer and a member provided a script to download them.  I foolishly decided not to bother because my pictures are available locally.  Big mistake! Now my forum images are hard to find because they’re mixed in with loads of others.

The new forum makes it much easier to put photos in posts, but they’re not organised into an album.

Hi, you may, or may-not find something in ME # Albums. It may take you a bit of searching, but I have found many of mine there.

            Regards Nick.

Thanks, Nicholas Farr, for that link.  I simply did a Google site search using my surname as the search term and, voilà, up came my old albums in a single keystroke.  Now all I’ve go to do is download all the pages!  (There’s a LOT of them.) Unless anyone has a link to that batch code that Dave (SOD) referred to?

                John

P.S.  I’ve bookmarked the Album for future reference!

Hi John, the thanks should go to peak4, as it was a link he posted shortly after the New Forum was up and running.

                  Regards Nick.

                    Nick,

I’m only too pleased to thank Peak4 for the link.  I’ve started downloading the photos one by one into fresh folders on the main computer. It’s terribly laborious but as I’m not able to work in the workshop at the moment due to painful joints, a little light keyboard bashing fills the time. One soon gets into swing of the procedure.

I had a look at the Model Boats version. Can see the pages but the individual images can only be downloaded at a very small size unless I am doing something wrong.

                        Colin,

I’m afraid that I can’t speak for the Model Boats site, but if you access it the same way as for the Model Engineer “old” site, (as discussed above), and then left-click on “View the Album”,this will bring up the photos in that particular album.  Left-click on a thumbnail and you’ll get to a page similar to this:

                        Photo demo

Click on the “Show full size” (red arrow) and that will display the origin photo at a larger size.  Right-click on that and “Save As” what you want to call it in a suitable folder.  Rinse and repeat as often as required.  At least, that’s how it works for me on the ME site.

                        John

                          Thanks John,

It looks like the MB sist has not been fully archived as I can’t seem to get further than the view the album stage and not all the thumbs seem to be populated. I will do a bit more poking around though as it may depend on how the album was created.

It’s not just you or MB Colin. If I do a sabove I may get some images shown as thumbnails and if I then click on one of those I can’t get anything else.

Hi, unfortunately not all the photos seem to be saved. When you come across an album with your name beside it, click on your name, and it will come up with your profile, and below the green bar it should show how many photos you had in all your albums, and clicking on that, will bring up all the albums you had, but some will look like the one that JasonB has shown above, and while many of them may have blank white squares, but if your lucky, clicking on those blue titles may open up the photo, and some or all will just give you a white screen, with or without the title of the photo, or the not available notice. I’ve even had at least one blank album that then revels all the photos one I clicked on one or two of those blue titles. It’s all a bit of pot luck though.

                                Regards Nick.

What appears to happen, is that a given URL is archived, so the “Albums” page of model boats (red circle) has been archived 244 times, as shown in the blue circle here
                                  image_2025-05-08_135108983

Each time that page is archived, the site seems to save page 1 of the albums list, which will be different on each day, or even within two presentations on the same day (Green Circle). It also seems to save mainly individual thumbnails.
The same “Albums” address shows a different content for each of the 244 archives, depending on the date, so all of these green circles will likely show a different result

It’s all a bit hit and miss finding what you seek.
Ideally find the top level address of a member’s album, and see if that’s been archived individually, though again, you might only find page 1 within that album.
So to pick a different date, page 1 of the “Albums” list show Gareth Jones at the top, and you’re able to pick his profile, which also happens to be archived.

From his profile, you can then see he had 1067 photos saved on the date in question,, which in turn shows his album’s URL, archived 5 times in total

                                  image_2025-05-08_140749498

Picking a different date within those 5 shows a different iteration of Page 1 so it might be possible to get an alternative try for a different picture within an album.

                                  image_2025-05-08_141149358

It’s by no means a certainty what happens next, as, in this example, the tug album hasn’t been archived, though it does show a URL.

Well, I must be one of the lucky ones! I’m into the second hour of downloading my album photos and no sign of blank squares.  Perhaps I should take a break and go out and buy a lottery ticket.

It is all quite intriguing but. no doubt like many others, I still have the original images on my PC and backups should I need them which I frequently do.
