I'm not much of a tree hugger but I do like the new tech and was aware of the rare earth metals industry being 90% plus in the hands of the Chinese

Turns out that rare earth metals are everywhere, but getting at them relatively cheaply to keep the cost of electric cars and mobile phones down is a seriously messy business

We don't have this industry in the west because to bring it up to our own standards would make the cost of our tech goods prohibitive

A bit depressing but worth a read

Bit like chrome plating. Motorbike manufacturers around the world get their chromed bits from China where the lax environmental laws make it way cheaper. But people got to have their shiney bits, and phones.
