      Hi Guys

Looking for some help with the restoration of my Super 7 (see photos in my blog if you fancy it)

Having gone this far with the rebuild, I wish to replace the leadscrew with a new one,

I have a early super 7 with a non powerfeed to the saddle, but I have a screw cutting gearbox.

The leadscrew is not all that bad, but at the same time, its not new, its at the inbetween stage, if it was all togeather, I propabley would not change it to be honest,

bt as its apart I may as well.

That said, I dont want to change it only to buy a cheap rubbish item and latter it,

SO my question is, were is the best place to buy a quality leadscrew for my super 7

we are talking the main leadscrew here

If the expense is too high for your budget, you might be able to use the old dodge of cut the old leadscrew at the point where the thread begins then turn the threaded section around 180 degrees and rejoin it to the unthreaded section. Usually done with a spigot on one part and matching hole on the the other to align concentrically. Then silver solder, tack weld, pin or Loctite together. This puts the worn section of the leadscrew near the tailstock where it is never used, and the unworn part of the thread is now near the carriage where it will now be used.

For a start, is your gearbox as old as the lathe? Does it have an aluminium cover with 3 cogs under it at the right hand end, or are there just the ends of shafts visible at that end? Along the same lines, does your leadscrew only fit into the gearbox by about 50mm and not pass all the way through?

All gearboxes have their serial number stamped at the right hand end. The early gearbox has its serial number under the aluminium cover at the same end. What serial number do you have? It make a big difference to the answers you seek.

                Edit:

I have the answers to above from your last picture. You have the early box prior to serial number QC2501. I have sent you a personal message.

If it's an 'oddity' then it may be easier/cheaper to get the threaded section re-machined [and half-nuts to suit].

There is nothing sacrosact about the original thread-form …

I had a Myford reconditioned Super 7 without a gearbox or cross feed which I rather liked. After a few years I bought a new gearbox from Myford and fitted it without difficulty. However the existing lead screw had to be shortened by a few inches at the headstock end.

Someone may have done a similar modification to your lathe.

Perhaps I should not include this but the lathe serial number was SK9101.

Yes DMR mine does have the cover with three cogs and the leadscrew only goes in a short distance into the gearbox

You have one of the first 9000+ S7 lathes and one of the first 2500 gearboxes ever made from 1954 onwards. An ML7 is the same as the S7 for leadscrew/gearbox purposes, but the vast majority of gearboxes on the ML7s are not like the one you have. You have my e-mail.

You can also buy lengths of Acme threaded bar leadscrew from industrial suppliers and cut it to fit your lathe.
