At the recent Model Engineer Exhibition I had a brief conversation with a gentleman on the SMEE stand, demonstrating screw cutting. I believe he was Derek Brown and he showed me the modification to his Myford gearbox to allow a quick change of the gears to convert an Imperial machine to metric.
I am sure he told me that an article on the mod had been published ‘last summer’ (2010?) and that the castings were available.
Can anybody tell me which edition of ME or MEW it was in or contact details pls?

And Merry Christmas to all readers!

Issue 177 of MEW has an article by Derek on this mod which is titled Metric Screwcutting without tears on the Myford

You can also do the same with what you have and far less hassle by just replacing the 24 tooth driving gear with a 33 tooth or 34 tooth.

            Ten minutes work max.

It is all a matter of how close in terms of pitch accuracy and range of threads you want/need. Read the article and then compare it with JS’s quick fix. I have the DAG Brown set up on my Super 7 and I am very satisfied.

Thanks for the info CoalBurner. I will take KWIL’s advice and read the article before making any decisions.
I avoided screwcutting on my little 7 x 10 even abandoning a Hemingway kit which needed internal and external threads. But now having just acquired an S7b and watched DAG I now feel confident enough to have a go.

                  Hi Peter,

Have no fear about screwcutting on a 7×10. I have cut threads up to 1 1/2″ diameter and in abroad range of metric and imperial sizes on mine.
