I was looking thru the MEW digital archives and found the following: Bandsaw Blade Welding, by John Pace, MEW #166, Aug 2010.

Specifically, there is Photo #5 (page 48, lower right) that shows a "MIG spot welder shroud tip" that has two small ears. A short description appears in the body of the article (page 49, 1st paragraph) that mentions Halfords as a source. Went to their website and looked around but I did not find anything similar.

I also tried a few welding suppliers on this side of the pond (I am in Canada) with no luck.

Hoping someone would explain how this works. What is the purpose of the ears and is their length/width critical?

        Thanks.

the ears are so that the gun can be accurately placed and distanced over the weld point – they are not required if you are competent with mig – they have the added bonus of holding both edges of the blade down. Sounds fine in theory, never tried it but would expect no more than a big hole where the blade once was!

            Fizzy,

You don't need a mif to vapurise a bandsaw blade, I managed very succesfully using my arc welder

Taper each end of the blade for about 1cm or less with a file, make a very simple jig to hold the two ends in place and silver solder the joint is my favourite method.

Does anyone know of a good place to buy coils of blade ?

I haven't been able to make a silver soldered joint last

Try Tuff saws – they do great blades (the last one I had was a Starrett) and if a weld breaks they will re-weld it for free. (It's the chap who used to be Dragon Saws).

I use Starrett blade stock obtained from Cromwell Tools and flash butt weld them on an Ideal brand welder. I know some who do silver solder, but the joint is harder and you cannot anneal it as you should.

Nothing is critical on the spot welder shround.

Push a bit of tube over a normal shround and file two ears into it, you want the tip inside the legs by about 6mm.

I the dim and distant past when I used to make a shilling welding sheds I bought a hand operated spot welder, not used in anger for some time now but invaluable for this job and welding cooking pot handles back on which goes some way to keep me in SWMBO's good books smile p
