Marking out punched numbers

Hi, I have just started construction of a Worden tool grinder. I have had the kit for 18 months, languishing under the bench but now I think I am ready to have a go. Partly inspired by the recent series in MEW and partly because I have a bit more experience and confidence.

 

So, I have deburred, etc and stamped the numbers on the main plate. My question is can anyone recommend a way of making the numbers more visible – by filling with paint or somesuch. I remember reading something about what to use to but for the life of me, I cannot find it now. So, what is the best way?

Hugh, I too have just finished the Worden. What I did to give a good finish to the plate was to use a sanding machine, the type that has an oscillating pad. The machine has an oblong base and the sanding sheets are attached with clips at each end.

It gives a very fine scroll finsh on the plate and takes off the rough bumps.

I have not filled the numbers on mine as they seem legible enough anyway. If you want the numbers to stand out then fill them and let it dry for some time before you sand off the plate.

Take care when you make the plate that the collar and screw are fitted. You have to turn a circular 15 deg. end to it. Marking the zero position and the two marks iether side, make sure they are accurate as you cannot see the zero position when the micro collar and knob are fitted and you have to rely on the other two marks to set the plate.

Do not paint the base or side plates as the paint will cause sticking and it will be hard to move.

I made all my bars the same length and had no trouble with that part.

Clean and degrease the part then use araldite twin pack with soot added to the mix to fill the numbers and lines. Wipe off with a hard plastic edge and place in a warm place to cure. Final finish with a light sanding to refresh surface. Finish with a light oil or machine wax. I find the araldite less susceptible to attack by oil than paint filled lines. Use artists pastels or coloured chalk for other colours.

Thanks All. I will go with the araldite method, just need to find some soot. Central heating is a boon but no good for the black stuff.

Try printing ink salvaged from an old computer print cartridge. Take care as it will spread!

Pat, thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of toner from a laser printer or photocopier but I still need to find someone with an old cartridge. They are all so eco-friendly now that they are hard to come by.
