Perhaps they have re-used an old document number
… but it would certainly be very annoying to spend £170 on the wrong document

Yes it looks as though BS has "re-used" old numbers but you need to be very careful – for example on the BS 2048, you'll also find a BS EN 2408 – covers alloys used in aircraft I think from memory so you do need to know the full BS number that you're looking for. It looks almost as though the good old BSI has set out to cause confusion, which seems a bit of a strange thing considering that their aims are to eliminate it. I suspect that it is a "legacy" issue with old standards series being retained, sometimes updated and at other times completely superceded by newly issued standards, but still the old versions linger in the system to trap the unwary – and oh boy are they expensive now. We hadn't used to think twice before ordering a copy of whatever standard we required, it was cheaper than spending time trying to find the info elsewhere.
