… and BS 170 is over £170 (discount for members again)!!! – very expensive little booklets.

      .

The strangest thing is that searching for BS170 returns lots of references to O-Rings

Perhaps they have re-used an old document number question … but it would certainly be very annoying to spend £170 on the wrong document crying

      .

P.S. there is brief reference to "our" BS170 on this thread.

Yes it looks as though BS has "re-used" old numbers but you need to be very careful – for example on the BS 2048, you'll also find a BS EN 2408 – covers alloys used in aircraft I think from memory so you do need to know the full BS number that you're looking for. It looks almost as though the good old BSI has set out to cause confusion, which seems a bit of a strange thing considering that their aims are to eliminate it. I suspect that it is a "legacy" issue with old standards series being retained, sometimes updated and at other times completely superceded by newly issued standards, but still the old versions linger in the system to trap the unwary – and oh boy are they expensive now. We hadn't used to think twice before ordering a copy of whatever standard we required, it was cheaper than spending time trying to find the info elsewhere.

Some good news on viewing BS and EN standards…. + some ISO ones. most of the middle and all the bigger public libraries have an arrangment with BSI to allow the public to view standards for free. I think you are allowed to print a few pages but I've never needed to do that. A great way to see if there is any useful info in the standard

At some libraries you have to pay a little to use the computer, 50p for 1/2 an hour or similar.
