This may seem a little off topic but I have a group photo of some 30 to 40 people, in some cases just heads and shoulders which I would like to be able  to  annotate using arrows with identifying numbers which can be listed in a spreadsheet against the relevant names. My only previous experience in marking up photos is by using the somewhat crude editing tools bundled up in photo software with the inevitable clunky results.  Can anyone advise me if it is possible to achieve the required more  professional  results using Google Photos?

No idea about Google Photos, but I use Faststone Image Viewer for jobs like that; free to download but shareware, so I every couple of upgrades I chuck a few quid in the pot.
        It works very well

I use gimp, but it’s a steep learning curve and the construction of annotations is manual.  gimp makes it hard work and I’ve not found a plugin that automates it.  Same job can be scripted in ImageMagick, also much more effort that I care for!

A quick look at faststone seems to reveal a gimp-like process, but a notch more automated.  But the user still has to create and position a bubble object, then overlay the bubble with a text object, and then add an arrow.  (Might have been misled by an old example, and the latest version is slicker.  Too many outdated reviews lurking on the web.)

Ideally, software should create entire annotations in a single easy step.  Must exist, but I’ve failed to find an example.  Anyone else?

I have used Paint from Windows 8 onwards. Photo editing software such as Affinity can be used.

One alternative may be to import the image into CAD, then apply balloon callouts (with manually set numbers).

For iOS devices … this is worth a look

I’m only using the free version at the moment, but am tempted to spend the £9.99 for the Bells & Whistles.

Regrettably. Bernard it is not compatible with the Macs … it’s a rare beast in being iOS-specific
