      Good morning all.

Anyone seen the piece about the 1744 wreck of the Victory on BBC news?

Fascinating insight into the beginnings of modern systems such as GPS, smart phones et al.

Amazing that a guy who was barely literate but an "ingenious mechanick" was able to develop such a device.

Read it and let us all know what you think.

Sorry Martin couldn't work out how to link to BBC but I'm sure someone will. It's in the business section.

Great British invention exploited by foreigners. Typical.

Re drones delivering everything. Do you remember the news stories in the '60s where cities were full of personal helicopters and elevated monorails? Or the fifties when everything was atomic peoered in the future and electricity was free? After a while reality steps in.

Thanks for the refernce, Mick [Plasma]

Predictably enough: The most informative part is in the Gentleman's Magazine rather than the BBC's added fluff.

                    .

Serson was a sea captain, and barely literate. But he was also an "ingenious mechanick", as The Gentleman's Magazine later put it.
