Is there a video size restriction for the forum, I,m assuming there must be as we have a maximum size for stills.

No, as you can't host the video here it is just a link you are posting so will be determined by what the host site offers be that Youtube, Vimeo etc.

Forum will display the video at a smallish size but just click that and watch it on full screen

Would I be correct in thinking that you have to resize a video to get a not so long upload time on Youtube. I have a 53 second video which Youtube shows as 32 minutes upload time.

Or get a decent broadband connection! The ones I post from my phone or camera are left at the highest setting and a 1min video probably takes 2-3mins to upload and process. But yes a lower resolution video will load faster.

                  Ron,

I am by no means any authority on this at all lol. I have limited experience of uploading various videos from various camera sources which have been successful more by trial and error and luck I would say rather than any kind of knowledge! I THINK it is more to do with the resolution that you use to shoot the video in the first place as to the ultimate file size. In low resolution a one minute video may have a file size of a mega byte or two but in high res many megabytes. One video I uploaded to youtube of my gear cutting was 10 minutes long, I had to if I remember right upgrade my account (still free) to allow it to be uploaded and it took several hours! I just set it to work before I went to bed and it was done in the morning. I guess it also depends on the speed of your internet, since we accepted a fibre upgrade from our provider for the same cost as ordinary broadband I can upload pictures to the other forum I use in seconds rather than minutes. The time taken can be a frustration but even on snail band it gets there in the end.

Merry Christmas by the way and look forward to seeing your progress in the new year.

                  Paul.

                    Thanks guys,

The broadband service in Devon is rubbish, almost every week on local radio there are businesses away from the cities or large towns complaining of how bad it is. I live in a village and I am with BT and the speed is dire. Will have a look at using a lower resolution and see how I get on.

Merry Christmas to you too Paul.

Just a test video I made showing my small workshop.

Recorded in MP4 which gave an upload time of 18 minutes, will have to live with that.

Get cable 200Mbps laugh but if stuck with twisted pair it can depend on what open reach provide along with what you pay for. Half my village are on a different feed after some extensive road works binging fibre up to the village hall junction box. No affect for me initially I was struggling to get 3Mbps but when I paid the extra I suddenly got 35Mbps.

If you are going to make videos remember some simple rules so we can actually appreciate your efforts.
                                1. Nobody wants to watch ten minutes of a fat beer belly blathering on to camera.
                                2. Only your mother wants to watch you if over 30 blathering on to camera.
                                3. Only women want to watch a man under 30 blathering on to camera.
                                4. Write a script for your commentary and edit it down to 1/10 of what it stared as.
                                5. If some part absolutely has to have a human talking to the camera find a teenage wannabe actress to present the script.
                                6. For anything repetitive or plain slow turning fast forward it. There is no need to show drilling of every hole in a sieve.

Out of interest, I just ran the BT speed checker I havnt done it for some time and it came back with 6.62 Mbps which BT say is good. I think when they say good they mean good for where you live.

Remember upload speeds are often a fraction of download speeds.

You can speed things up by converting your video to a more compressed format before upload.

Not sure I agree with all Bazyle''s comments but most machining videos are too long, spend far too long wittering before anything happens and have far to much long, boring footage that doesn't tell you anything. Also anything not filmed using a tripod is tiring to watch.

Ron, as Neil says, the upload speed will be a lot lower than the download speed with normal adsl broadband.

I have just checked mine and it shows 8.6 Mbps download but only 0.7 Mbps upload. If I use my EE mobile phone on 4g as a modem, I get 54 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload.

I recommend getting some video editing software to fine tune your movie before uploading. Trim all scenes and cut out any unwanted footage. Nothing more boring than watching the same thing for long periods. Don't waffle-on and talk endlessly. Synthesized background music in some editing software is also boring, good commentary much better.

I use Powerdirector to edit video, not overly expensive and works on my old Core2 Duo computer. It allows me to re-render video to different formats, (AVI, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, etc), change screen size and resolution. Even export directly to Facebook, Youtube, etc.

                                            Paul.

Here's a trick I use for re-sizing videos taken on my mobile phone – send it to someone on Whatsapp then you can copy it from your sent folder from the phone to the PC (if you want). The software does a great job of shrinking the video size whilst keeping a good balance of size vs quality.

Ron when you are in Youtube there will be a "share" tab below the video. Click that and then look for "embed" again click that and a small window will come up with a long address and a tab to "copy"

Once copied all you have to do when posting is click the little youtube icon where you want the video to be and then paste what you just copied into the window that comes up and say OK. It won't look like the video in your post just a large box with "IFRAME" in it but once you submit the post it will show OK.
