Feeler Gauges

Gents,

I bought some feeler gauges and noticed that they are not in order (see pic). Is this normal and if so, why are they like this? Please excuse the newbie question.

Thick ones on the outside protect the thin ones to stop them getting bent when you fold it up. Also if you have a stack of say 3 fingers and push them into a gap they will stay straight, a thin one on the outside may buckle up and not go in.

Sounds logical, thanks. I thought the seller might have taken them to bits and not been bothered to put them back in order

You know when he's done that when the thicknesses go in ascending order!

You may find some very thin ones are still stuck to some of the thicker leaves.

If one cared to look at the sets on epay, one might see that a lot of them are in size sequence.

I suppose they are for the dimwits that cannot be bothered to sort out the different sizes. Perhaps they only expect to use just one leaf at a time?

I expect that interleaving thick with thin was started in days of old when people could add up, use more than one leaf and because the sets could be slimmer, use less resources and were cheaper because of that.
