Dave , Sorry to hear of your woes with an ER 40 collet chuck. Not sure what type of lathe spindle nose you have but the one that I mounted my ER 40 on is a camlok D1-5 It is vital that the baclplate is machined flat and at 90 deg to the spindle axis, or else any deviation from that will be magnified the further away from the spindle nose you go. I took particular care to get that right and have very good readings even at 125mm from the collet face.

You can see the results in a previous thread about the collet chuck. I hope you can sort it, as they really are very accurate and very repeatable. I wish I had got one years ago.

        .

As Raymond says the problem may lie with the back face or taper of backplate and not the chuck.

My experience of the budget (£50-60) camlock backplates is that they are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. sad

Hi Nick, So very true about the "budget " Camlok backplates. I bought one ONCE and the taper was quite a way out from matching the spindle nose. Bought a Rohm one [ big bifference in price ] and baclplate taper and spindle nose matched perfectly. So now its only ever Rohm ones for me. . I still always give a light skim across on every backplate I use before fitting whatever im fitting., I think the flatness of the face is even more critical than the register diameter, as that can be adjusted to true running then tightned up but the flatness of the face and the 90 degrees to the spindle axis is vital.

          Cheers.
