Dry back coal fired boilers

I recently bought Brian Wilson's book Steam Trains In Your Garden which is essentially a guide to building 16mm scale garden gauge locos. In the book he also describes a dry back coal fired boiler of such simplicity of construction that it seems almost too good to be true. Such boilers have also been described by K.N.Harris and John Haining. Has anyone built such a boiler with good results?
