Colchester Chipmaster Tailstock cleaning

Hi

I've recently acquired a Colchester Chipmaster, the serial number I've found dates it to 1980. I've also got hold a manual that shows 2 tailstock variants, including the later version which matches mine (I've not found a serial on the tailstock, so can't be sure it's the original one).

The lathe came covered in years of swarf, soot and hardened grease so I'm giving it a good clean.

I'm starting on the tailstock and have got most of it dismantled, but I can't get the barrel out. The combination of the barrel, the clamping pad and the barrel clamp level seem to all interlock and stop any one item being removed.

Has anyone had a similar issue and overcome this problem?

If the tailstock is functioning correctly why do you need to dismantle ?
If it aint broke don't fix it.

There is probably a burr raised on the clamp pad by the lever. Just a guess.
