      Hi Gents.

Moving house to new one without three phase, thinking of using inverter drives for Colchester and Bridgeport. Colchester is OK – dual voltage motor .

But I have a niggling doubt in my memory that I have read or seen somewhere that the Bridgeport motors cannot be run from an inverter and the motors are not readily interchangeable.

Anybody done this or got any advice please?

My Bpt is fine on an inverter, but it is NOT the low pancake motor

I've run my BP pancake motor on a VFD for several years without issue. There's no obvious reason why they shouldn't be happy and many people do this. Usually concerns might centre around eddy currents in the bearings or insulation stress in the windings but that's really not an issue here.

When you say the Colchester is dual voltage, do you actually mean it's dual speed? Some of the std Colchester motors (eg my Bantam) are dual speed but that is different to being connectable in either star or delta. They are set for the different speeds by connecting up the poles in different configurations. I swapped my Bantam motor for a 2800rpm totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) motor from ABB and drive it with a std VFD.

you can now get 415volt output inverters, put one in for a freind of mine last year, runs all his three phase stuff including the switchgear . http://www.drivesdirect.co.uk/Products/Digital_Inverters240_415.htm

My 2 HP Bridgeport has run happily on a cheap Chinese VFD for a few years now. I did try running it on a Transwave static inverter but it would only run a short time and stop. My 3 HP lathe runs OK on the same static inverter.
