Has anyone ever fitted a screw cutting gearbox to a Boxford BUD or CUD lathe ?

Are there any castings or drawings to make one ?

      Richard,

Never seen one, only the Machin and earlier version for the Myford.

One point is that if you need to change ratios a lot between special and metric etc that can be more hindrance than help. I fitted a genuine Myford box to my ML7 and regretted it from day 1.

Having said this if you predominantly work only in imperial I can see where they will save time.

            Could try this

            http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xboxford+gearbox&_nkw=boxford+gearbox&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Gear wheels are £15 a piece and there are 13 or more in the box !! Plus you will need most of your standard gears plus the 100/127 metric convertor plus a few other gears to cut a good range of metric threads. It could work out a bit expensive. May be time to replace the lathe and sell yours ? Having said that, I love my Boxford and there would have to be a very good reason for me to get rid of it.

Anyway, good luck with your project – an article in MEW ??

All the Boxford A,B,C, AUD,BUD,CUD & TUD beds I have seen have the three pre drilled holes for the Boxford gearbox either Imperial or Metric.

Never seen one fitted with an "aftermarket" box.

You occasionally see genuine gearboxes on Fleabay for around £250 which is around what building a Myford compatible Machin/Hemingway gearbox may cost to construct let alone something bespoke.

A South Bend gearbox may also fit best place to ask that question though is the South Bend Yahoo group.

The old Boxford I have is imperial I dont cut many Metric threads on it but when needed it's not that much of a job to slip on the 100/127 compuond gear and whatever stud gear for the needed thread.

              Regards

              Paul
