I recently acquired an 8" Boxford Mk2 shaper, in excellent condition although the meshing of the drive pinion with the crank gear is a little 'loose' for want of a better description.

The manual states that this meshing can be adjusted by means of the gear shaft eccentric.

The manual does not however, illustrate or describe how this adjustment is achieved.

Do any owners of this machine know how this adjustment is carried out?

        cheers

        Graeme

          Hi Graeme,

I didn't realise the meshing was adjustable until you mentioned it! I didn't touch the bush when I rebuilt mine.

Looking at the drawings I have, the bush for the drive axle is indeed eccentric. If you take the drive pulley off, the bush is fastened to the main casting with 3 clamps with 2BA bolts. If you loosen those bolts you will be able to rotate the bush and so adjust the mesh.

          Hope that helps,

          John

            Thanks for that John.

            News to me!

            Must check my Boxford now.

Geoff – One of the reasons I joined this forum – useful info!

Does anyone have any details/drawings etc of the optional vertical feed mechanism that was fitted to some of the later underdrive Boxford shapers?

According to lathes.co.uk – When fitted with power vertical feed, the operating mechanism was cleverly designed to allow its pawl and ratchet assembly to be swung through 180 degrees to engage either movement.

Mine looks to have been prepared for this in that it has the indexing gear fitted to the vertical movement drive shaft but some of the mechanism seems to be absent.

Failing this I can feel an adventure into a CNC'd machine taking shape (Pun intended)

                Hi CB,

I can photograph the mechanism on my one if that will help.

                Regards Barry

                    Hi Graeme

Found this diagram of the horizontal power feed.

                    horizontal feed.jpg

This shows the additions for vertical feed

                    vertical power feed.jpg

Ratchet wheel and spur gear are keyed / pinned together but not to the horizontal feed shaft.

                    Hope this helps – Barry

                        Graeme,

Got the diagrams from the Boxford web site, under their spares listings.

                        Regards

                        Barry
