Sadly this evening, the spindle motor on My Ajax mill let out all of its stored smoke.

It's a varispeed head very similar to the bridgeport, 3HP motor. does anyone know of a source for a replacement or a motor rewinder in the Hampshire area

AES Rewinds in Farnborough will sort you OK, not too far either.

Thanks Ken, I was wondering if they were still around, have found their details so a visit will be in order very soon, off out to strip the head down now, not quite how I had the evening planned

At 3HP don't bother with a rewind, it will cost x 3 what a new motor costs.

Get the motor off, take some pictures of the flange and shaft fitting with dimensions, then get the price of a rewind and new motor.

              .

Chances are you won't get a motor to the exact fittings you want but new motors can be modified to match.

This is something I do all the while.

John, I suspected that may be the case, any motor I get will need some modification, this is the one from the mill

You need to strip the pulley arrangement to check for wear as this could affect any rebuild prices from AES but go ahead and see what they say as they are local to you.

Chances are I can supply a new quality motor and convert it cheaper than they can repair it. Not saying anything against AES, I don't even know them, but I deal with three rewind companies local to me so I know how they work.

As Lagun are still in business & still make a version of this machine, it may be worthwhile asking them direct for a quote.

Most UK machine tool agents do rather "over egg" their spares prices, but I was (pleasantly) suprised at my last employment when I contacted Spanish manufacturer Zayer direct for a price on a set of 4 spiral bevel gears for a double angle universal head – a UK gearmaker had quoted several thousand to make a set to sample, where the OE parts were £500 and ex-stock. Carriage costs were not excessive either.

                    Contact details here : http://www.lagun.com.es/sat_en.html

Might come to nothing, but also costs nothing to ask.

                      Hi John

As suspected, not worth a rewind, minimum £350+vat

There doesn't appear to be much wear in the pulley sheaves although whilst I have it off the machine I guess its worth returning them at the same time.

About 10 years ago I got a dual speed 3 ph. 2.2/3KW motor rewound for £154 at a place in the Nursling Factory estate (W. of Southampton). Sorry I can't remember its name.
