The tool system is/was a copy of something sitting on a friends EMCO 8 50 years ago and it was idiotic even then.

I have made something better.Tool System

Wow, if my workshop were that clean I put a bed in it too. The 'tool system' looks like a tangential?

Nice addition Neils, looks like a very substantial tangential tool holder, are you planning on making a few more holders of this size?

The force way from tip to bed is winded and long.

Rigidity is best and the solution I use (copied from SouthBend) is much more direct

Modern lathes have no compound arrangement at all

I am for my new lathe.

One taking 3 times 3 almost square carbide sticks and one taking 3mm round.

Years ago I offered to sell people the carbide but no one came forth.

To make complete holder for other people is somehow not my set up.

Main problem was to have potential customers measure precisely the distance from upper surface of compund slide to lathe centerline.Plus minus 0.01 mm.

If You want to try to make for Yourself ,there is a describtion of procedure somewhere and I will find the links.

Start with the 3mm round version .

Modern lathes have no need for a comound as the CNC can move X and Y at the same time which I can't

It is undoubtably more rigid but is it really needed, I have managed quite happily with my 280 for 11 years and an Emcomat 8.6 for 25years before that. I don't just do small work and can often have the need to machine 250mm + cast iron flywheels or large steel fabrications.

The tool holder would also be quite slow when it cam to change tooling which I frequently do on a part and looks as if it will be a problem when working on small items when using tailstock support. 3mm round would be like using a tool with 1.5r tip, how do you get into corners with that without leaving a substantial fillet? A larger radius tool also puts more load on the lathe so maybe that is why you have had to increase rigidity.

What's going on here?……is that lathe mounted on a cast concrete beam?…..what's with the tub support which will get in the way of the turners knees surely(?)

I see you use a locknut – is that to prevent loosening whilst taking heavy cuts, as it does seem rather extended in the pics?

You need the extra overhang as without it that big block mounted to the cross slide will get hit by the chucksmile p

not just a locnut but a nylock and a locknut.

Somehow the editor mixes pictures and text in funny ways, but carbide shown is 2times2 carbide with one corner modified to 85 degree. It made the 120 times 110 mm baseplate within one grind.

Given the sink and fridge freezer in the background, you appear to have a lathe in your kitchen.

I am a widower and cannot play piano so that went out and a lathe came in.

It is my present living room-kitchen and this is the reason I prefer carbide tooling.

I go bare-feeted and know imidiately when I have to vacuum to avoid injuring jaws of my dog.

In a month I change to a bigger apartment with two bedrooms and the big room will get plywood all over for lathe and milling machine .Sawing, grinding and filing is done in an outside, unheated shelter.

There is almost direct line of sigth from my new bathroom over water to NewYork.

All this nonsense of roundnes of globe is a damned conspiracy.

The nylon lock nut is a M12 and just give distance as the chineese M10 compound slide stud has no thread down there.

The flanged M10 nut just came first when I searched for a M10 nut.

                                              Hello George

I have looked at Your pictures and read some of Your posts and will be honoured if You will try my tangential holder and write something about Your findings .

Bad or good or improvement proposals.

                                              I am not going comercial.

The lathe on photos is a 250 somewhat like my new love.

To be usefull for Your lathe I need the exact measure (plus minus 0.02mm at least) from upper side of compound slide to lathe centerline.

If You will do me a favour try the thing, please measure and let me know.

I did it on a Boxford this way

That definitely looks to be much more rigid, Niels.

As long as non of the new parts get in the way of anything, then it appears to be a worthwhile modification. thumbs up
